GROUP HISTORY

In January 1981, Ken Small stood up at a Burns' Supper in Brockville and asked if anyone would be interested in Scottish Country Dancing. So began the group which has been operating in Westminster School, Brockville, since September of that year.

Initially, teachers were supplied by the Kingston Branch. Our first teacher was John Trew. He traveled to Brockville from Kingston for two years, and was instrumental in ensuring the future of the group through his good teaching and humour. Other teachers from Kingston who provided support included David Smith, Jill Wing and Ray Croxford. In 1986, Ruth and Bob Taylor and Ann Macdonald, and later Cathie Taylor and Lynn Burrow, took over combined responsibility for teaching the class. Ruth obtained her Preliminary Teacher's Certificate in 1989 and has run the class since then. She qualified for her full certificate at 1998 TAC Summer School in Vancouver.

In June 1982, some members had the temerity to participate in the Brockville Sesquicentennial Celebrations by dancing on Courthouse Green to an audience of over 3000! Over the years, members of the BSCD group have also provided entertainment at retirement homes, Burns' Suppers, the Brockville Multi-Cultural Fair and other events both here and in Kingston. Social dances at Christmas and at the end of the Winter session were introduced in 1983 and have been a popular event ever since.

Many people have come and gone over the years, until today, with a membership of 31 only three of the founding members remain - Ruth and Bob Taylor and Rusty Saunders.
