Frequently Asked Questions

What is Scottish Country Dancing [SCD]?

Contrary to what might be expected, it is not a type of folk dancing, it is Scotland's version of ballroom dancing. Like contra and square dancing , several dancers work together to form a series of figures. Typically, three to five couples form a set, the men forming one line facing their partners who form a line opposite them. The footwork in SCD uses positions similar to ballet with the feet turned out when dancing. This is far less demanding than might initially be expected. When done properly, SCD is extremely elegant and graceful. It has been rightly called "a form of controlled abandon", and its GREAT FUN !

Do I have to bring a partner ?

No. It is usual in Scottish Country Dancing for dancers to change partners for each dance. This is an important social aspect of the dance, and means that you get an opportunity to meet and dance with lots of people.

Do I have to wear special clothes ?

No. For ladies it is useful to wear a light wide skirt, to allow free movement. Men who have worn a kilt prefer to do so for dancing, but this is not essential. In time, most dancers buy a pair of dancing shoes, but for beginners soft soled shoes are highly recommended.

Is there an age limit ?

So long as you are willing to have to have a good time, there is no age restriction. There are dancers from 8 to 80 and beyond, all of whom enjoy Scottish Country Dancing in their own way.

Where can I learn to dance ?

The RSCDS has local associations around the world. In the Kingston Area the Branch is always willing to welcome new dancers. Each year we introduce several new people to Scottish Country Dancing, so you won't be alone. The other groups in the area, which are all run by RSCDS qualified teachers, are equally willing to accept new members, if this is more convenient than attending Branch Classes.
