Workshop
Saturday Afternoon April 26 2:00 - 5:00 pm.
Prince Edward Yacht Club, Picton
Guest Teacher : Sheila Scott, London, ON
Music : Fred Moyes, London, On
Our guest teacher, Sheila Scott, was luckily born into a "cross cultural" dancing family in her native Scotland. Her mother was English and her father Scottish, so she is equally at home with both country dance traditions. George Emmerson was her mentor when she emigrated to Canada and she taught the University of Western Ontario SCD student group with him for several years. She was interested in the performing group in the English Playford repertoire from the 17th. and 18th. centuries and "The Early Dance Circle" was formed.
Sheila holds an RSCDS teaching certificate and is former chairperson of the Teachers' Association of Canada (T.A.C.) Wearing her English hat, she has been a dance leader and organizer with True North Music and Dance in London, Ontario (a social dance group) and has also led The London Playford Dancers (a performing group) for over 10 years. She has taught at Mainewoods Dance Camp for three summer sessions, and given guest workshops in Ontario.
During the workshop, she will introduce Scottish country dancers to the delights of lively English community dances, including some contra dances popularized in New England, as well as the more elegant dances dating from the 17th. century to the present day. Some of the figures will be familiar, but may have different names. A "reel" for instance is called a "hey" and can be danced with 3,4,or 6 people. So, plan to enjoy the afternoon exploring dances from "south of the border" - no need to bring your passport! There will be a short juice/coffee break.
Dinner is being offered , catered at the Yacht Club, Picton and starting at 6:30 pm. After dinner, there be a dance from about 7:30 - 10:00 pm. This will consist of a mixture of dances which were taught at the afternoon workshop and some Scottish Country Dances.
Friday Evening Dance Class
Our regular Friday evening dance class at the Town Hall, Picton (above the firehall) from 7:30 - 10:00 pm will be a social dance, and dances from the Tartan Tea can be reviewed as requested. Refreshments will be served after the dance.
