National Tartan Day, Apr. 6, 2025

National Tartan Day began in Nova Scotia on April 6th, 1987, to celebrate the culture of the Scottish diaspora and the immense contribution Scots have made to the world, both in Scotland and in their adopted countries. On December 19, 1991, in response to action initiated by the Clans & Scottish Societies of Canada, the Ontario Legislature passed a resolution proclaiming April 6th as Tartan Day. Tartan Day has since been proclaimed by all the provincial legislatures. On October 21, 2010, the Minister of Canadian Heritage officially declared April 6 as Tartan Day. It is celebrated on April 6 because it is the anniversary of the signing of Declaration of Arbroath in 1320, which states in part: “…It is in truth, not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom — for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself…”
